St John Ambulance Cippenham and Burnham Badgers and Cadets

  We are Cippenham and Burnham Badgers and Cadets Divisions.   Badgers are aged between five and ten years old and cadets are aged between ten and eighteen years old.   We learn 'First Aid' as well as other subjects and activities.

  We meet at St Andrew's church on a Thursday evening,   Badgers start at 6:30pm and finish at 7:30pm.   Cadets start straight after and finish at 9pm.

  At the start of Badgers, we fall in, register and then play a game before our main activity.   We cover lots of different topics and activities. These include;

  •  Hungry Badger

  •  Global Badger

  •  Creative Badger

  •  and Eco Badger

  Each subject that is completed, counts towards their 'Super Badger' badge.

  At Cadets, we study various activities and topics including First Aid.   Some other activities include;

  •  Media, (news papers, television and radio)

  •  Animal Welfare

  •  History of St John Ambulance

  •  and Craft

  These activities count towards our Grand Prior award.

  There are many events organised by Berkshire HQ for both cadets and badgers from all over the county.   These are held at different location across the county and vary from training days, to parties and to days out.   There is a weekend Badger county camp held once a year for the badgers to get an idea of camping.   There is also a weeklong camp held for the Cadets once a year.

Working with the Berks Bucks and Oxfordshire wildlife trust (BBOWT)

On a cold but fortunately dry Sunday morning a group of Cippenham Cadets donned welly boots and gardening gloves and met up with our local coordinator of the BBOWT.   Brian had the Thursday before attended division and gave the unit a very interesting talk on the history and conservation work currently being undertaken at the “Milly” a wild life conservation area less than a mile from where we meet that most of us had never heard of.   One of the projects Brian spoke about high on the trusts to-do list was the digging of 5 small ponds to encourage newts and frogs back into the area.

Hence there we were armed with picks and spades digging ponds.   After 3 hours of digging, loosing boots in mud and a mud slinging match we finished the final pond a very smart des res for newts.   After a cup of tea more energy was found and off we went for a quick litter pick before going home to a much needed hot bath.
